Metallica releases professional footage of ‘Master of Puppets’ with lightning in Munich

The moment became widely popular during the band’s current ’72 Seasons’ tour.

Last month, the performance gained widespread attention due to the dramatic weather at the open-air Olympiastadion stadium. As Metallica launched into the iconic opening riff of ‘Master of Puppets’ amidst heavy rain, a bolt of lightning lit up the sky. A fan captured the moment and tweeted, “Went to the Metallica concert in München today, a thunderstorm happened and it made for the coolest fucking intro of all time.”

NME interviewed Metallica last year, during which drummer Lars Ulrich discussed the significant impact of Stranger Things featuring ‘Master of Puppets’ in a pivotal scene of the show’s season four finale.

“We’re seeing a lot of 13 to 14-year-olds attending our concerts for the first time,” Ulrich noted. “Our shows have always had a coming-of-age element, and the Stranger Things phenomenon last summer unexpectedly introduced Metallica to a whole new generation.”

Currently, Metallica is on tour promoting their latest album, ‘72 Seasons,’ released in 2023. As part of the tour, they perform two sets in each city, with different setlists and opening acts.

During their second performance in Munich on May 26, the band debuted ‘Inamorata,’ a track from ‘72 Seasons’ that stands as the longest original song in Metallica’s discography, running just over 11 minutes.

The title of Metallica’s longest recording overall goes to ‘Mercyful Fate,’ a medley of covers honoring the Danish heavy metal band. At 11:11, it surpasses ‘Inamorata’ by one second. ‘Mercyful Fate’ is part of Metallica’s 1998 compilation album ‘Garage Inc.’

In a four-star review, NME’s Kevin EG Perry described ‘72 Seasons’ as “a ragged beast that explodes out of the traps and never lets up.”
